Why OptiStrength?
The Surgeon General's on report on exercise was released to the public on July 11,1996. According to the components of the report, an estimated 250,000 premature deaths result in the U.S. each year due to the lack of regularly scheduled exercise. The costs to the health care system from degenerative processes are staggering in light of the conclusions the report makes, especially when up to 75% of all diseases are preventable with sound nutrition and exercise.
Health promotion is inherently cost effective, and a minimal investment up front will reap large cost savings over time. We have seen this time and again in the corporate health and fitness segment where companies who invest in health promotion and fitness programs (Tenneco, Steelcase, Ford Motor, etc.) have saved as much as 50% in annual health care costs, have had more productive work forces, and have seen ancillary benefits when they add health promotion to their employee's benefit packages.
The main focus of health and exercise should not be just to increase life span, but to "compress morbidity" of its participants. Dr. James Fries (Stanford University) published a report which stated that if people participated in regular exercise and health promotion activities, they may not only extend their lives, but reduce their chances of long term illness, thus reducing chronic health care expenditures. This philosophy sits well with administrators because it not only reduces chronicity of illness by its effectiveness, it helps reduce absenteeism and chances of injury, increases productivity and lowers corporate health and workers compensation costs.
